What is The John McGowan 12 Hour Challenge

The John McGowan 12 Hour Challenge is an endurance fundraiser created in memory of John McGowan and brought to you by Athlone Triathlon Club. In our inaugural year as a community we raised over €40,000 for two charities, the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Athlone Family Resource Centre. This year we want to continue on the success of 2025 and are raising vital funds for three incredible local charities: Samaritans -Athlone Midlands, Infinity Friends Athlone and Athlone River Safety Awareness.

Participants can take part as a solo participant or as part of a relay team, choosing between cycling, running, or a mix of both. In the Spinathon, a new guest instructor takes the stage every hour with fresh beats and energy to keep you moving. Runners can pick can set their own challenge for every hour, making the event accessible for all levels.

More than just a test of stamina, the John McGowan 12 Hour Challenge is about community, resilience, and fun. Whether you’re pedalling, running, or cheering on participants, every hour is a chance to make a difference. Let’s honour John’s legacy together and make every hour count!
